Here are some basic tips for patterns in scrollsaw:
- Make sure to make a cut on only wood which is totally dry. Therefore before you begin the cutting process you need to dry out the wood completely.
- You need to be careful of the scale of the pattern, irrespective of whether you are enlarging or reducing the pattern. Even a small deviation can result in major differences in the final piece.
- If you want to avoid splitting when you work with thin wood place a plywood piece scrap underneath.
- Make sure to make the cut accurately and then keep monitoring the process to ensure accuracy.
- You need to drill holes from either side so that you don’t end up causing wood splintering. You may even cause unnecessary holes in the wood!
- Always make sure to use sandpaper for ensuring good finish.
- If you are relatively amateur start off with simple patterns at the beginning. Never rush into the process and take it slow. Once you rush the process you may end up with irreversible errors.
- Keep wood pieces in close proximity when you need to perform wood shaping.
- It’s always better to take small breaks in between so you space out your work. Take enough time as you need to ensure optimal results.

A good option is to employ the usage of graphite or even carbon paper to make the pattern impression on the wood surface. You can even take a photocopy of the pattern and then use tracing paper to trace the pattern with a pencil. Then simply transfer the pattern on wood. It’s far less messier as compared to carbon paper.
If you wish to stick patterns to the wood you can try using spray adhesives or even carpet tapes for this purpose. Carpet tape can be a good alternative as it never leaves any residue. Another good option is to use tranferring technique using a hot iron. If you happen to get a residue from the adhesive try using mineral spirits to get rid of it.
