Wood carving really is a cool and fun hobby. It can also be rewarding as well… Personally, it is reward enough to get appreciated for the hardwork done. And what’s great about it nowadays is the skill and imagination of wood carving artists, one woodcarving I really liked was a child hugging bear wood carving. You can also check the resources, if you want learn to carve wood like the Pro…

Learn to Carve Wood Like a Pro

It takes more time than effort to learn to carve wood like a pro. Wood carving is an enjoyable pastime that has been enjoyed by many people for centuries. With a few simple tools, the right piece of wood, and time to develop your skill you can learn to carve wood.

A few of the basic tools are a sharp knife, several gouges in assorted sizes, a coping saw, and a sharpening kit. A ruler and a carving clove also come in handy. Gouges will be the tool you use most, invest in several quality ones in several different sizes. Your sharpening kit should consist of a honing stone, leather strop, and ceramic slip stones for your gouges.

Next you will need to choose wood for your project. White pine is an excellent wood to start with. It is forgiving and does not fuzz as much as other woods when carved. As you gain experience with wood carving you will move on to other woods. When selecting wood, keep in mind the finished piece. If it is to be left natural then choose woods that are visually appealing when only oiled or sealed. Save the light colored woods for ones you will choose to paint. Also, if the piece in going to be kept outdoors, oak stands up well to weathering. In the beginning, use what is available to you and experiment when you get the chance.

There are patterns available for wood carving. These can be good to introduce you to the different aspects of the art. Eventually if you want to really hone your craft, you will need to design your own carvings. You can draw your own patterns and transfer them to the wood by either gluing them on directly or using carbon paper.

Keep in mind wood carving is a skill, and it will take time to perfect your cuts and designs. With a bit of patience and a touch of practice you will soon be carving wood with skill.

Woodcarving – Some Tips to Help You Along

Woodworking is a wonderful hobby that can result in crafts and furniture that can be treasured for generations. Woodworking is also becoming a popular hobby and is an important industry. A skilled woodworker with access to a nicely equipped workshop can build things like a simple birdhouse or as complicated as furniture. Excellent Woods for raw materials can be purchased at lumber retail stores and hobby supply shops.

Some folk seem to be a bit confused as to what is a board foot? A board foot is a unit used in the measurement of wood. It is equal to 1 foot length x 1 foot width x 1 inch thick. It should be noted that the thickness is nominal thickness. After drying and surfacing the usual thickness of a 1 inch board is 13/16. A board 10 feet long x 1 foot wide x 1 inches thick would be equal to 10 board feet.

I am often asked What is the right way to handle the glue squeeze out problem? The answer is quite simple…Use the correct amount of glue!. The (obvious) danger is a glue-starved joint. Wipe off the excess glue immediately with a damp sponge or paper towel.

Some woodworkers say that the water-glue mixture will soak into the wood and will show up when the piece is finished. Lots of others including me say that this is not a problem.

Another good method is to allow the glue to harden a bit, and then chisel or scrape it off. The effectiveness of this method probably depends on the type of wood and finish that are used.

If you have been a woodworker for many years or are thinking of taking up this fascinating hobby, please remember that Woodworking requires tools and techniques that are inherently dangerous. This makes workshop safety a top concern for any woodworker. When working in the shop please remember that it is important to protect your eyes, ears, and lungs, and take great care when using hand and power tools.

Wood carving isn’t as hard as many people may think. All you just need is to constantly practice and supplies for wood carving. If you’re a beginner, it would be best to stick with easy wood carving patterns first.

Scroll Saw Patterns Help You In Carving Wood

Right from ordinary to highly detailed and intricate patterns, scroll saw patterns allow you to create interesting designs over wooden surfaces. If you intend to create several woodworking patterns then scrollsaws are a necessity. You could either buy these patterns or procure them free of cost by browsing the Internet. You need to start off with simple patterns and then transition into more intricate ones as you get more experienced with sawing techniques.

Here are some basic tips for patterns in scrollsaw:

- Make sure to make a cut on only wood which is totally dry. Therefore before you begin the cutting process you need to dry out the wood completely.

- You need to be careful of the scale of the pattern, irrespective of whether you are enlarging or reducing the pattern. Even a small deviation can result in major differences in the final piece.

- If you want to avoid splitting when you work with thin wood place a plywood piece scrap underneath.

- Make sure to make the cut accurately and then keep monitoring the process to ensure accuracy.

- You need to drill holes from either side so that you don’t end up causing wood splintering. You may even cause unnecessary holes in the wood!

- Always make sure to use sandpaper for ensuring good finish.

- If you are relatively amateur start off with simple patterns at the beginning. Never rush into the process and take it slow. Once you rush the process you may end up with irreversible errors.

- Keep wood pieces in close proximity when you need to perform wood shaping.

- It’s always better to take small breaks in between so you space out your work. Take enough time as you need to ensure optimal results.

Wood scrollsaw patterns

You can obtain a variety of scrollsaw patterns by browsing the Internet, completely free of cost. Some patterns may be offered free of cost while some maybe up for sale. You can obtain these patterns by purchasing books. Many such patterns will be provided in theme based pattern books with headings like children’s designs or holidays etc.

As and when you come across patterns which are interesting you should print these out. You can always keep these printed patterns for later use, if not immediately. Many times you may find a pattern which was available on a free site earlier, not present now. You can hard bind all these printed patterns for future use. You could even make a photocopy of favorite patterns from your pattern books. Keep adding to your collection from these patterns. This way you will very soon have an organized collection of prized patterns which you can use later on.

A good option is to employ the usage of graphite or even carbon paper to make the pattern impression on the wood surface. You can even take a photocopy of the pattern and then use tracing paper to trace the pattern with a pencil. Then simply transfer the pattern on wood. It’s far less messier as compared to carbon paper.

If you wish to stick patterns to the wood you can try using spray adhesives or even carpet tapes for this purpose. Carpet tape can be a good alternative as it never leaves any residue. Another good option is to use tranferring technique using a hot iron. If you happen to get a residue from the adhesive try using mineral spirits to get rid of it.

You might find out more about his abstracts on scroll saw projects at many different sources for scroll saw projects knowledge.

Wood carving chisels play an important part in many woodcrafts. It is important to keep them sharp as they are one of the commonly used tools in wood carving. Learn how to sharpen chisels by reading the article below.

Wood Carving – How to Sharpen Straight Chisels

If you’re just starting out as a wood carver, you’ll quickly discover how wood chisels are used all the time. There are many kinds, many sizes. They’ll need periodic sharpening and it’s good to be able to do them yourself. It isn’t very fitting to have to bring your tools to a professional sharpener whenever they become dull. You lose money, you lose time. And best of all, straight chisels are the easiest wood carving tools to sharpen.

Straight chisels can be sharpened in two steps. The first is to get the tool’s edge to sharpness, and the second is to strop that edge to silky smoothness.

- Straight Chisel Sharpening. This is sharpening for straight square chisels and it’s very simple. Start with a coarse grade sharpening (honing or whetting) stone. Make the shaft vertical with the edge touching the stone. Slowly lower the end facing up until the edge’s surface touches the wood. Stop right there. With the beveled face flush on the stone, you have achieved the correct sharpening angle.

While holding the chisel’s beveled face flush against the stone, place your index finger on the top of the beveled surface for better control. Pull the stone towards you, away from the edge. Do this 10-20 times and then check for the burr. A burr is a feather-like sliver of wire that will come off the chisel’s edge when you have achieved absolute sharpness. You slide your finger across the edge (never lengthwise!) and a burr will feel like sand or grit on your edge. If there isn’t a burr, do another set of strokes until you’ve correctly raised it. If the tool has a second bevel, sharpen it as you have just done with the first bevel. Sharpen until you’ve correctly raised the burr.

After sharpness has been achieved with a coarse stone, move to a fine grade stone. You can do this with just one fine grade stone or with a succession of increasingly fine grade stones. Perform the sharpening strokes in the same way until you get a burr. If you’ve got a second bevel, do the same until a burr is raised. Be very sure that you’ve raised a burr along the entire length of the chisel’s edge, and on both sides. If you won’t make sure, just stop what you’re doing and go watch television. I’m not kidding. If you’re going to sharpen, do it well or not at all. It will affect how well you’re able to carve. (If that doesn’t matter to you, really, then what are you doing?)

There are a couple of different stroke techniques that are commonly used when sharpening straight chisels. With your index finger on the top of the beveled surface as you grip the shaft, place the fingers of your other hand on top of the first. Instead of pulling the tool towards you, you run it in circles. If not that, you can also push the tool sideways in one direction and then sideways in the other. There is no one specific method. Experiment and see which technique is best for you. I like the stroke that pulls away from the edge best. It’s the simplest way to raise a burr and then detect it.

- Skewed Chisel Sharpening. Skewed chisels are just a bit different from straight chisels. A skewed chisel’s edge is at a slanted angle, a skewed angle, and joins the side of the chisel head at an acute angle of less than 90 degrees.

Sharpening a skewed chisel is done in just the same way as sharpening a straight chisel. There is only one difference. The skewed edge needs to be made parallel to the forward edge of the sharpening stone. Or the edge can be made perpendicular to the side edge of the sharpening stone. Either way works fine. Just be consistent if there is a second bevel.

- Chisel Stropping. Your well-sharpened chisel now has burrs all along its edge. Well done. Stropping will remove those burrs and all other micro-bits still clinging.

You’ve got a couple of choices when it comes to stropping. First choice: You can use a free strap of leather to strop your edge in one direction and then the other. Lay the beveled face of your chisel’s edge flat on the strap and pull away from the edge, parallel to the length-wise surface of the strap. Near the end of the strap, lift the chisel and turn it over. Place the opposite face of the chisel’s edge flat on the strap. Pull in the opposite direction, away from the edge and parallel to the strap surface. Back and forth and back and forth until your edge is silky smooth.

The second choice for stropping your chisel edge is to use a stropping board, also referred to as a honing board. This could be in the form of a flat rectangular board, a paddle, a wooden bench or it could be one you make yourself. The technique for using a stropping board is just the same as the technique used on a free leather strap.

Leather strops and stropping boards are usually combined with a polishing compound. It facilitates the stropping process and makes carving much easier. It may be in the form of a liquid, a paste, powder or even a solid block that fits in the palm of your hand.

Stropping is a very important step in sharpening and shouldn’t be dismissed. Think of it as you using a chisel with a dirty edge. It surely doesn’t perform as well as a clean edge. And because it’s dirty, using it will cause you to have to sharpen it much quicker than you usually would. So strop, and strop well. Your carving will be better for it.

Beginners need to be very careful when stropping. As novices in this art, the edge is often rounded instead of being polished smooth. That’s because the edge isn’t truly flat during the stropping process. A secondary bevel will be produced that thickens with each sharpening. Eventually, the only way to save the edge is to remake it. That would be a great loss in time and effort. Pay close atte 679 ntion.

When you’ve trained those hands to do a good job, you’ll be able to sharpen any straight chisel, any skewed chisel in your tool collection. That’s a lot you already know about sharpening carving tools. Keep it up. Just be so careful and watch out for secondary bevels.

Planning to carve a bench? If you wonder what’s the optimum bench height while woodcarving, some interesting ideas on this can be found on the article below.

Build Your Own Woodcarving Bench

Whether wood carving is just a weekend hobby or a serious pursuit, you may eventually wish to have a carving bench. You can build your own bench with minimal effort and benefit from having the perfect place to carve your creations.

In order to ensure safety, a stable bench is important. You will want your seat to be the right height so that you can sit up straight and aren’t slumping over your work. You will need to decide if you want your bench to also provide tool storage, a vice, and whether or not you want it to have flat or tilted surface. Study commercial benches for ideas.

Once you have decided on what you need, you can start building. If you will be attaching a vice make sure the bench is heavy enough so that it will remain stable. If you carve heavy pieces you will also need to ensure that your bench can support the weight. Choose sturdy wood that is free of knot holes and cracks. You do not want any weak spots on your wood carving bench.

Six feet is a good length for a bench. You can use 2×4’s cut to length for the top of your bench. 2×3’s can be used for the legs. Make sure the legs are well braced so that your bench remains sturdy. If you are going to add shelves, you may want to make them removable so that you can enlarge your work space if needed. Adding a drawer is an excellent idea as it will give you a safe place to store your wood carving tools so they do not get damaged.

By designing and building your own bench you will have a good place to work that is suited specifically to your needs.

To begin with, you will have to aquire extreme patience and a desire to create or carve wood robots. I can give you my reason for this. Ever since childhood I have enjoyed collecting space figures, space robots, space everything. In fact, at one time I wanted to be an astronaut, but that didn’t work out. So, here I am trying to convince others to enjoy the art of carving wood robots.

Next you will have to invest in a good carving knife which you can purchase at a good hobby store or wood carving supply house. The best advice I can give you on this is to keep the blade at inch or an inch and a half. There is a reason for this: You can work with a small blade better than a long one, and you will prevent accidents to yourself. That’s right, the possibility of cutting your fingers is there and the more precautions you take, the better you will be. Don’t let this worry you much, if you are careful, your accidents will be minimal.

Let me continue on the subject of the carving knife. It is my recommendation to select a tool that will feel comfortable in your hand. The knife handle should be a lot bigger than the blade. The reason for this is control when you carve your wood robot. By the way, when you finish your project, don’t expect the robot to move. Just a bit of humor on my part. Let me continue, now a days a good carving knife will cost around twenty dollars or more. What are you looking for in a fine carving knife? Any good carver will tell you the same thing I recommend, it must be sharp! Yes, the knife must be made of the finest steel and must maintain a razor sharp edge. If you learn anything from this article, let it be that to begin carving wood robots you must have patience and a very sharp knife.

Woodcarving is quite fun once you know how. Why not get your supplies for wood carving and start learning right away. If you don’t have tools for it, you can try to recreate these tools yourself. Learn more about it through the article below.

Home Made Hand Tools For Hobby Foundry Work

If you have been thinking about making a start in hobby foundry work in your home workshop, you may be forgiven for thinking that the tools and equipment are going to cost you an arm and a leg, this need not be. Sure, you could trot off to the downtown industrial tools supplier and take home an arm full of expensive tools.

But if you take a good look at some of the tools, you’ll discover that the design principles and fabrication could well be undertaken in the home workshop if you have metal fabrication skills and a reasonable amount of basic metal working equipment.

Take for instance "crucible lifting tongs", once you understand how these tools operate; you could quite easily make a set or two over a weekend. The basic design action operates on the "scissor principle" but they don’t cut anything, they are designed to "clamp securely" onto the crucible to lift it out of the furnace when the metal has melted. Great caution needs to be taken while carrying out this operation, as one slip due to faulty or badly designed tongs, and you could have a disaster on your hands.

The best way to design and build a set of tongs is to copy a well made set, or to follow directions set out in a textbook or ebook downloaded from the net, we’ll give you some links a little further on in this article.

Some of the most frequently used basic tools you’ll need in the hobby foundry are; Bench ramming moulders tool – Tube sprue cutter – turned wood sprues – slick & oval spoon – hand riddle or sand sieve – draw pins, screws & hooks – rapping bar and spike – gate cutter – strike off bar – sand carving tools (made from old hacksaw blades).
The tools mentioned above seem to be the ones that will be most used in your hobby foundry… and all of them can be home made if you have metal & wood working skills, it will take time and effort to make the tools required but they wont cost you a red cent if you make them from scrap materials, and if you are like most hobbyists you will know where to "scrounge stuff".

You may have to experiment with different ideas before you arrive at the most satisfactory design, but you will learn a great deal about why things have to be made in certain ways.

Do you own a wood lathe? Even a most basic machine will suffice in the home workshop, you could even make your own if you were keen enough,I guarrantee there are tens of thousands of home made wood lathes sitting in hobby workshops the world over. A wood lathe will repay itself many times over when you start to make patterns for your hobby foundry.

Your bench-ramming tool can be quickly turned to shape on your wood lathe, in fact, while you’re at it, make two or three of them in different shapes & sizes, they will all come in handy when ramming and moulding patterns of differing sizes, you could get away with a single tool, but you wont regret making extra tools.

After a pattern has been completely rammed in a sand mould, and before the metal is poured, the pattern has to be removed without disturbing any of the surrounding sand. Draw pins and spikes are used to remove timber patterns from sand moulds.

Simple draw pins can easily be fabricated from long slender wood screws, particleboard screws are ideal. The easiest way to convert woodscrews into draw pins is to braze-weld a short length of 1/4" dia mild steel rod onto the head of the screw…that is all you need to do… make a set of them with different gauge screws as well long and short ones and you should have the field covered as far as lifting pins or draw spikes go… simple isn’t it.

Blunt hacksaw blades are usually thrown in the bin, from now on you should save them, as many useful little hobby foundry tools can be made from old saw blades, quite often small sand carving tools can be quickly made by grinding and shaping using a normal bench grinder.

By being resourceful and thinking how you can use scrap materials, you should see now that there is absolutely no need to spend large amounts of money to get the tools and things you need for your hobby. If you are not sure about your own building & fabricating abilities then you should always ask advice.

Wood Carving Tools

Any homeowner who enjoys working in the garage should invest in wood carving tools at some point in their lives. From the expert woodworker to the weekend warrior, tools that can be used to quickly carve wood come into play. There are many wood carving tools on the market today, some of the more basic ones include:

Knife – A sharp pen knife is the most basic of wood carving tools. It can be used in a variety of ways and should be included in any wood carving kit. Be sure to buy a durable blade with a heavy gauge steel.

Chisel and Hammer – A chisel and hammer are necessary when digging out large chunks of material. Always make note of the grain of the wood when using a chisel and hammer or you risk removing too much.

Coping Saw – A coping saw is used to make intricate turns in wood. Necessary for most wood workers during those first few minutes when you are taking a block of wood down to a general shape of the finished product.

File – A file refines of wood after the saw, knife and chisel have been at work. It’s the first step in completing a finished woodworking project. Careful, being too aggressive could damage the features of the wood.

Sandpaper – Helping to complete the finished product, sandpaper is a vital part of woodworking for smoothing rough cuts.

Wood tools are important for anyone with a shop at home. Even if you don’t think they are necessary you will eventually come across a project requiring the use of these tools. Better to have them and not need them than the alternative.

Aspiring to become a wood carver? Well, if you are looking for free and easy wood carving patterns, the internet can be a very wide source of information. Below are some scroll saw patterns that may help you start wood carving.

Wood carvings of hands are simply the best. Compared to machine made wood carvings, handmade woodcrafts are unique and can be distinguished easily depending on the carvers style. In fact, in some of the countries in Asia, talented wood carvers earn quite a reputation in making handmade works of art, earning them both fame and profit.

Make Money From Wood Carvings, Without You Carving Anything

Wood carvings have always been popular. Most people, who have ever been to countries such as Indonesia, or the Philippines, will have seen them being made by hand. The talented craftsmen sitting cross-legged on the floor, chipping away at a piece of wood, until they have created an animal, person’s head, or other wonderful piece of wood carving. These unique one-offs always seem far more special than anything we could make. Then, one day, you visit a craft shop back home, and see a shelf filled with identical wood carvings. How do they get them all to look the same? Surely, one craftsman cannot be that precise each time? Well, no, they can’t. The secret behind this mass-production is a wood-carving machine. This is where you can set up your own lucrative business, making woodcarvings, without having to lift a single carving tool yourself.

The wood carving machines take one wood carving, and make identical copies. The way they work is almost magical. The original carving is literally traced by the machine, and it carves a second copy as it goes. That original carving, that costs two hundred bucks, say, then becomes two. The opportunities are endless. You can make as many copies, of any wooden carving, as you want to. Each one is identical to the first, and can therefore be sold for the same amount of money. Wooden seats for stools, wooden book ends, wooden Christmas tree decorations, and anything else that you can find, can all be duplicated in the same amount of detail as the original.

The only outlay that you need to make is for the machine, and the wood. Some of these wood carving machines can be found, second-hand, on sale for as little as a couple of hundred bucks. So, if you made a copy of a carving that originally sold for $200, you could sell the second one for the same amount of money and have recovered the cost of buying the wood carving machine with only one carving! The wood that you use can also be any type that you can find. You can even find wood for free. A lot of people have trees in their gardens that they do not want anymore, and have them cut down. Quite often, the trunk is then chopped up for fire wood. However, if you get in touch with a person who you know has just had a tree taken down; you can probably get some of the wood before it has been chopped up into smaller pieces. They will be glad that you take it off their hands, and probably not want any money for it. It is worth getting in touch with your local tree surgeons, or other companies that actually cut down the trees, and see if they can get hold of the wood for you cheaply.

Before you know it, you will be creating wood carvings that are every bit as good as the original hand-carved ones, and building a nice little business out of it that you can expand massively!
